WHAT IS A SOUND BATH??

A sound bath - sometimes called a sound immersion / a therapeutic sound bath / a sound healing / a sound healing meditation or a sound therapy session - is an event you attend, where you usually lay down (you can sit if you wish!) You relax; maybe on a therapy bed, a yoga mat, a rug or a blanket ... And you're bathed in sound!  The facilitator will play a unique sequence of sound therapy instruments, which may include Crystal Bowls, Tibetan Bowls, Gongs, Drums, Chimes, Flute, Shakers and Voice (to name but a few!)  All of which, when played in the correct manner, are designed to sooth and calm the nervous system.  They may even take you on a journey!  It's a meditative experience and the sound waves, frequency, tones and overtones of the instruments will have an affect on the brain, the body, the mind & the soul. (Even if you don't realise it at the time!)  Everything in the universe is vibration ... including your body, cells and organs and your entire being will be affected by these frequencies & vibrations. 


BUT HOW DOES SOUND & FREQUENCY AFFECT ME?

Sympathetic Resonance | Entrainment | Frequency Following Response

Sympathetic resonance is a harmonic phenomenon - What happens is:  Your body (all of which is frequency / vibration) responds to the external vibrations (the frequencies of the instruments I'm playing) to which it has a harmonic likeness. 
 
Entrainment happens when the sounds or beats played elicit a response in the body & brain.  A pulse of sound creates a pulse of electricity in the brain. The body is always striving for harmony.  
 
Frequency following response is the tendency for our mind and body to be affected and synchronised by an external source - such as sounds and rhythms. 


WHAT HAPPENS AS A RESULT OF THESE PHENOMENA?

When we calm our mind & emotions by activating a relaxation response we can drop into lower frequency brain waves.  When we drop into lower brain wave states & deep relaxation, our bodies can start to heal. 
Calming our minds calms our nervous system and returns us back to our parasympathetic state of  'rest & digest' as opposed to when we're super stressed and operating from our sympathetic system, sometimes knows as 'fight or flight'.   We can also release trapped emotions, stagnant energy and past traumas which may be held in the body. 
We can create ‘space’ in our thoughts as our mind is filled with the various harmonious frequencies & sound waves.
As our brain tries to identify the complex tones & overtones of various instruments it means less time for mental chatter!

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF A SOUND BATH?

This unique modality can affect your entire being.  Mind, Body, Spirit & Soul.  Benefits may include:  Feeling clearer / Having more clarity.  Feeling calmer.  Having improved sleep.  Releasing old / unhelpful / negative subconscious thought forms & patterns.  Feeling positive / More motivated.   Feeling more balanced.  Improved mood!  Feeling happier!  Feeling more like you!

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING WITH ME?

Bring anything you need to be comfortable during the session.  I like to make sure I'm wearing comfortable, loose clothing.  I bring an extra pair of socks because I'm prone to cold feet & hands!  I bring a yoga mat to lie on, a blanket to lie on and a blanket to lie under.  I also bring a pillow and an eye mask.  Another great suggestion is a sleeping bag! <- PERFECT to keep you comfy and cosy!  Absolutely optional whether you bring all or none of these!  At minimum I would bring something to lie on, so you're not laying on the bare floor, but again, most of the venues all have chair so please feel free to just come and sit through a session!
Finally and maybe most importantly ... Come with an open mind & an open heart! 


SOME POINTS TO NOTE:

∆  It's likely that each sound immersion will have a unique & different affect on you.
∆  Go into each session without expectation or attachment to previous experiences.
∆  Trust that what needs to happen for you will happen for you.
∆  Your body is a highly intuitive instrument - The frequencies will go where they are needed.
∆  Even if you think you weren't affected by the sound immersion ... You most definitely were! 
∆  The effects of the sound immersion can still be happening up to 72 hours after the experience.
∆  Hydrating leading up to the event is highly beneficial because water is a carrier of sound.
∆  Relax and drop in - This is time for you to relax & receive!  Enjoy the journey!
